The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the recall of 143 million pounds of beef produced by a California slaughterhouse, some are saying this is the largest beef recall in history
Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said in a statement, “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall.”
Officials also have stated that this was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats. No illnesses have been linked to the recalled beef and officials have said the health threat was likely “small”.
